This form of organ based specialization akin to the western practice is one of the very few in the country and GEM runs at the forefront in this pathway. The division is aimed to offer comprehensive surgical (and medical) care to patients with benign and malignant (cancer) diseases of the Esophagus and Stomach through laparoscopic bloodless surgery. The department has also established the most advanced physiological laboratory for a detailed evaluation for patients with swallowing problems and gastroesophageal reflux diseases.

With the availability of the most advanced imaging systems , the da Vinci Robotic surgery system, 4K laparoscopic suite, 3D imaging in laparoscopy , even complex surgeries like cancers of the oesophagus and the stomach can now be made simpler with less blood loss and very quick recovery. This is possible by the magnifications and inbuilt technologies in these systems enabling seeing the spread of tumour better.Hence the superiority of advanced imaging in laparoscopy in many fold compared to conventional open surgery.Dr.Palanivelu’s technique of minimally invasive prone approach for treatment of oesophageal cancer has been considered as the gold standard technique around the globe, which could only be mastered by a few pioneering surgeons.

Surgeries Performed

  • Laparoscopic fundoplication for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Laparoscopic hellers cardiomyotomy for achalasia cardia
  • Laparoscopic radical subtotal/total gastrectomy for cancer stomach
  • Thoraco-laparoscopic esophagectomy, lvor Lewis Esophagectomy for oesophageal cancers
  • Laparoscopic / endo-laparoscopic resections for GIST
  • Laparoscopic vagotomy-GJ for chronic peptic ulcer disease
  • Emergency laparoscopic services for complicated peptic ulcer disease
